Frequently Asked Questions
New to Speir? Considering a membership? Wondering if reformer Pilates is right for you? We've answered the questions we hear most — honestly.
01 — About Speir
Speir Pilates is an athletic reformer Pilates studio founded in Los Angeles in 2015 by Andrea Speir. We combine classical Pilates technique with modern strength training, functional movement, and music-driven energy to create a workout that's both effective and genuinely fun. Our classes are designed for all levels — from first-timers to advanced athletes.
We have four studio locations in Southern California: West Hollywood, Ocean Park (Santa Monica), Mar Vista, and Newport Beach, plus a virtual platform called Speir On Demand for workouts anywhere.
A few things set us apart. First, the workout itself — our classes blend classical reformer Pilates with HIIT, barre, and strength training techniques, so you get full-body conditioning that goes beyond traditional Pilates. Classes are musically-driven, which means the energy feels more like a boutique fitness experience than a quiet clinical session.
Second, our instructors. Andrea personally trained and vetted every instructor at Speir. The caliber of coaching here is unusually high — you'll get real-time form corrections and feel the difference in your results.
Third, community. Speir is intentionally body-positive and inclusive. We're female-founded, LGBTQ+-friendly, and genuinely believe Pilates is for every body — not just a certain size or fitness level.
Speir Pilates was co-founded in 2015 by Andrea Speir, a Los Angeles-based fitness expert with a background in classical Pilates, functional training, dance cardio, ballet barre, and personal training. Andrea has been named one of the top fitness instructors in the country by Women's Health Magazine and has been featured on the covers of Pilates Style Magazine, Yoga Journal, The Pilates Journal, and more.
We currently have four studio locations in Southern California:
Can't make it in person? Speir On Demand gives you access to 500+ mat and reformer workouts with Andrea, anytime and anywhere.
02 — Classes
We offer four main class formats on the reformer:
We also offer personal training (1:1 private sessions) with progress-tracking technology for those who want a customized approach.
Yes — absolutely. We welcome complete beginners and design our classes to be challenging yet accessible. Our instructors give form corrections and modifications throughout, so even if you've never been on a reformer before, you'll leave feeling confident and accomplished, not lost.
If you're nervous, we recommend starting with a Strengthen class, which builds your reformer foundation at a pace that works for everyone. You can also book a private session first to get oriented before joining a group class.
In-studio group reformer classes are 50 minutes. Private sessions are scheduled based on your needs, typically 50–60 minutes. On-demand workouts through Speir On Demand range from 5 to 60 minutes.
Most clients start seeing noticeable changes in strength, posture, and muscle definition within 4–6 weeks when attending 2–3 classes per week. For faster results, 3–5 sessions per week is ideal. That said, even once a week consistently will build a meaningful practice over time.
Pilates is cumulative — the more consistently you show up, the more dramatic the results. Our membership structure is designed to make it easy to build a sustainable routine.
Pilates is widely recognized for its benefits in back pain relief, injury recovery, and rehabilitation — and Speir's method, grounded in classical Pilates and functional movement, is particularly well-suited for this. Many of our clients come to us specifically for these reasons.
We strongly recommend letting your instructor know about any injuries or limitations before class. They can provide appropriate modifications. For significant injuries or post-surgical recovery, a 1:1 private session first is a good way to get started safely.
We recommend consulting with your OB or midwife before beginning any new exercise routine during pregnancy. If cleared for exercise, Pilates — with appropriate modifications — can be excellent for prenatal fitness and core support. Please inform your instructor before class so they can modify exercises as needed. Private sessions are a great option for pregnant clients who want a fully customized approach.
Speir On Demand is our virtual workout platform with 500+ mat and reformer Pilates workouts led by Andrea Speir. New workouts drop every week. You can stream on any device — iPhone, Android, Apple TV, or Roku — or through the Speir app.
It's ideal for clients who want to supplement in-studio classes, travel frequently, or aren't near one of our locations. New member intro offer also applies to On Demand memberships.
03 — Membership & Pricing
Memberships at Speir start at $165/month. We offer several membership tiers depending on how many classes you want per week. New members get $75 off their first month with code NEW75.
We also offer drop-in options and class packs. Visit our pricing page for current rates. Memberships can be paused or cancelled — see our membership policies for details.
Yes! New members get $75 off their first month of membership. Use code NEW75 at checkout. Memberships start at $165/month, so your first month starts at $90. It's a great way to try Speir consistently for a full month and experience real results before committing long-term.
Yes. To request a cancellation, email memberships@speirpilates.com. Please review your membership agreement for notice period requirements. Cancellations via Instagram, social media, voicemail, or text are not accepted.
You can cancel a group class without a fee up to 12 hours before the class start time. Cancellations within the 12-hour window incur a $25 late cancel fee and the class is forfeited. No-shows are treated as late cancels.
For private sessions, there is a 24-hour cancellation window. Cancelling within that window or no-showing results in a charge for the full session rate.
You can cancel through your online account, the Speir Pilates app, or by calling the studio during business hours.
Yes. In addition to monthly memberships, we offer class packs and drop-in options for those who prefer flexibility. Visit our pricing page for current options or call us at (310) 596-3191.
04 — Your First Visit
Wear comfortable, form-fitting workout clothes — think leggings and a fitted top. Tight-fitting clothes aren't required for fashion reasons; they actually help your instructor see your alignment and give you better form cues.
Grip socks are required for all classes — no bare feet or shoes on the reformer. You can purchase grip socks at the studio if you don't have a pair.
For your first class, we recommend arriving 10–15 minutes early. This gives you time to check in, sign your waiver, get oriented to the reformer, and chat with your instructor about any injuries or questions. The reformer can feel unfamiliar at first, and a couple of minutes of orientation goes a long way.
For regular classes, aim to arrive no later than 5 minutes after the class starts. Late arrivals are not admitted to avoid disrupting the class, and a late cancellation fee applies.
Yes, we strongly encourage booking in advance. Classes fill up — especially morning and evening sessions at West Hollywood and Newport Beach. You can book through your online account at speirpilates.com, the Speir Pilates app (available on iOS and Android), or by calling the studio.
If a class is full, join the waitlist. Spots open up regularly, and you'll be automatically added if space becomes available more than 12 hours before class.
All locations have street parking nearby. West Hollywood and Mar Vista locations are near parking garages with retail parking available. Please read posted signs as payment may be required. The West Hollywood studio on Santa Monica Blvd is also walkable from much of the neighborhood.
The minimum age for group classes is 16 with a parent or guardian present for the duration of class (the parent may take class or sit on a bench). The parent/guardian must sign a minor waiver. All clients 18+ may attend without parental supervision.
05 — Studio Policies
Cell phones are not permitted during class. Please leave yours with your belongings. If you have an emergency, you're welcome to step out to handle it. We ask this out of respect for your fellow clients and instructor — a distraction-free class is a better class for everyone.
Pets are not permitted inside the studio. Please leave your furry friends at home or outside.
All retail and merchandise sales are final. We do not offer refunds or returns on physical products purchased in-studio or through our shop.
